I'm kind of over constantly refilling chlorine jugs.

What are the pros and cons of going to a salt system?

Is the conversion difficult?

any info appreciated.

thnx

Pro: no problems with chlorine running out again and pool turning green.

Cons: none other than set up cost.

Had the set up for nearly 20 years beachside. Currently running a Hayward system.

Salt system and auto vac system are two great inventions.

I love mine. I admittedly hate taking care of my pool and honesty spend 2 minutes a week doing it. Now about once a month I have to put in about 15 minutes. Very minimal up keep compared to my neighbors.

Think it is about $1000 to convert.

I wouldnt bother.

The cells in the salt-chlorine generator blow out and you have to replace the cell every few years. My cell is $800. That buys alot of chlorine.

Plus you have to buy the big bags of salt and make sure that is in there.

I found the best way to keep the pool chlorinated w/o the generator is to buy the Clorox Pool Chlorine floater. Its like $20 and lasts all month to a month and a half. They sell them at Publix.

so. $20/mo x 12 months is $240. compare that to replacing an $800 cell.

And eventually you need to replace the contoller when it blows out. Also consider how much the system costs in the first place.

All so you dont have to "maintain" it.

Well, buying 3 floaters at Publix and throwing one in the pool every 30-45 days isnt much maintenance.. just my opinion.

Worth it. They do go out but 1) maintenance easier and 2) water seems "softer and 3) kids never complain about eyes

To be clear- salt generators still produce chlorine in the water.. its just created via the cell from the salt, rather than added directly as chlorine.

I bought a SW kit. Anyone have any recommendations on someone locally (melb/ indialantic) who could install. Many of the old valves are severely corroded as well. I'd like to replace a few of those while the PVC is getting cut up.

Thnx

I needed a valve replaced on my system, my neighbor recommended Scott Foucher (sp?) at 321-544-5352. Spoke with Scott this morning, seems like a nice guy, he's taking a look at it this afternoon. I'll report back positive or negative afterward.

Short version: he seems like a good guy and definitely knows his stuff. Gave me a quote today and going to install my new valve tomorrow.

Scott came out and took a look today. I had a cracked pipe leading into a valve, he first checked whether it was something he could repair but unfortunately that section of pipe had been repaired already (2 inch pipe had been cut and a 1.5 inch coupling glued inside) so I need a new valve installed. I have a close friend in Orlando that does pools and he had confirmed everything Scott told me via pictures I sent so that made me feel better, and when I mentioned this to Scott he said that since it wasn't a really simple/cheap fix he wouldn't get his feelings hurt if I wanted to wait on my friend to come out and do it to save the money. I appreciated that but Scott will be installing the valve tomorrow. My friend also confirmed that the prices we discussed for parts and labor were reasonable. Will report back after the work is done tomorrow.

Update: Scott did a great job, very professional and priced reasonably. I will call him again next time I need something done.
